A mother, crafter, Tea Addict.

#2. What goodies do you offer in your shop?
Original patterns and easy to follow tutorials to encourage people to make their own handmade felt pretend play food and toys for their kids instead of buying the plastics one.
I also sell quality felt fabrics from Japan at my other etsy shop http://litlbrownbird.etsy.com

#3. How was your shop started?
I started selling the actual felt play food and started having a lot of requests for the patterns. So I switched to patterns instead.

#4. What are some unique things about your shop?
My felt patterns are original with actual cut out paper patterns and very easy to follow. detailed color photographs tutorials. I work with beginner felters in mind.

#5. What or who inspires you?
God and my 1 year old baby, Megan.

#6. What is the item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why?
I'll have to say it's the dollhouse, I didn't think I can make it but I did it.

#7. What advice would you give to artists who are new to Etsy?
Believe in yourself and stay true to your own style. Read up on the useful tips on Etsy's Digest (Etsy Success). Participate in Etsy community where you can get advise & support.

What is your favorite "pick me up" song? Here's mine. It's called "Lemonade" by Chris Rice. The music is so fun and catchy while the text is really optimistic. It put a smile on my face every time, and I can't just help singing alone. Enjoy!

#3. How was your shop started?

I read about Etsy on a discussion thread on the HGTV website. Thought I'd check it out. Opened up my shop, sold a bowl right off the bat and was hooked!

#4. What are some unique things about your shop?

My fish teapots.

#5. What or who inspires you?

The large scale butterflies were inspired by the work of Georgia O'Keefe. She loved to blow things up, zoom in and explore flowers. I love to blow up b-flies. Besides Georgia, the 4 cats we used to have that are all now in kitty heaven, and coral reef fishies (from our days of scuba diving).

#6. What is the item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why?

Girls Night Out Lola and Sonya Out on the Town - I had the idea, and as I thought more about the project I kept coming up with more things to add. They're over the top funny and make me laugh. I was so excited that the teapot made it through all of the firings. You have no idea.

Today is not necessarily an easy day for many of us, and we vent our discontentment in many ways. Recently, I'm praying about confronting a dear friend of mine for constantly putting others down with criticism, which does not say so much about those people are but more about how unhappy/discontent he is with his life... Suddenly, it dawns to me that his and my inability to be content with our circumstances actually hurt us so much more than others, and we are unknowingly pushing joy (and other people) away by refusing to rest and be content.

Contentment is indeed a choice, not just a feeling. Just like love.... Yet, it is definitely not an easy thing to do... So, in case it's getting too hard to be content, God, in his infinite wisdom and love, comes in the picture to give us the most logical reason and the only encouragement we need in order to be content, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” Nope, my life is still no where near perfect, but I guess I can truly rest now in this great promise... If the God of the universe is on my side, why am I complaining and refusing to let go of my frustration with life and "let God be God"?

This familiar little verse has been a huge encouragement for me today, and I hope it will give you hope as well. How about you? Are you embracing this promise for yourself today? Let's rejoice in our Lord...

"Banh xeo"

"Banh xeo", pronounced pronounced bahn sow, is a a delicious crunchy chewy crepe that is dear to the heart of all Vietnamese Southerners, including myself :). The word "banh" means "crepe", while the word "xeo" describes the sound of the crepe when it hits the hot skillet. Its vibrant yellow comes from a sprinkling of turmeric, and the filling is a combination of pork and shrimp, scallions and bean sprouts. Every savvy "banh xeo" lovers takes pleasure in wrapping chunks of the crepe up in lettuce leaves with herbs and dipping them in "nuoc cham", a special dipping sauce made out of fishsauce / nuoc nam and other seasonings.

Here's a wonderful recipe that you can easily follow and make your own delicious "banh xeo". Don't hesitate to give it a try!

(From left to right, top to bottom: flour mix, shrimp and pork filing, Mung beans, bean sprout, "banh xeo" being cooked, dipping sauce)

Banh Xeo Vietnamese Crepe

makes 2 crepes

Crepes
1 cup rice flour (Thai versions are fairly easy to find)
1 cup water
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
pinch of salt
vegetable oil for frying

Filling
4 ounces small shrimp
4 ounces sliced roast pork
4 scallions, sliced
2 cups bean sprouts

Wrap
leafy lettuce leaves
fresh herbs such as mint, Thai or Vietnamese basil (optional) and cilantro

dipping sauce (see below)

In a bowl mix the rice flour, water, turmeric and salt.

Heat a little oil in a 10 inch non-stick pan and cook the pork and shrimp. When cooked through, add the scallions. Add a little more oil, you may need a tablespoon or two to make the crepe very crisp and chewy. Pour in 1/2 cup batter on top of the fillings and tilt the pan to spread the batter into a crepe. Top with bean sprouts and cook for several minutes until the bottom of the crepe is beginning to turn brown and very crunchy. Fold the crepe in half and drain on paper towels. Serve with lettuce and herbs and dipping sauce.

Nuoc cham dipping sauce
2 teaspoons sugar
1 teaspoon chili paste or a chopped red chili
2-3 Tablespoons fish sauce
1-2 T lime juice (or lemon juice)
1/4 cup water
1 clove garlic, minced

Mix all the ingredients, taste and make any adjustments you like.

Voila! Here's your finished products! Yum!

Colorful, contemporary art and accessories for the home-- ranging from decorative throw pillows to original canvas paintings.

#3. How was your shop started?

I've always loved to create beautiful things through a variety of creative mediums -- sewing, knitting, crochet, painting. Friends and family have been telling me for years "You could totally sell this stuff!" but I always thought they were just being nice. After receiving more and more requests from friends and coworkers to buy my work, I decided to go full force and turn it into a business!

#4. What are some unique things about your shop?

My shop features items that are both stimulating to the eye as well as to the touch. With my pillows, I incoporate a variety of fabrics to create a unique mix of patterns, colors and textures. You will also see a lot of bold colors and textures within my paintings.

#5. What or who inspires you?
I draw much of the inspiration for my work from various elements of the Asian arts, jazz music and nature.

#6. What is the item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why?

Lavendar Jazz. This is a piece that I was conceptualizing in my head for a long time before actually putting paint to canvas. It incorporates several loves of mine --jazz music, art and the color lavendar! In this piece, I tried to capture the essence of jazz music broken down to its most basic elements and the ways in which jazz simultaneously exudes simplicity and complexity in its form.

Happy Monday, everyone! So, many of you probably do not know that I'm taking hairdressing class right now. I actually finish the basic training, i.e. basic hair washing/blowing, coloring, perming, cutting, and I do enjoy it very much. Can you tell I'm all about making women look their best :)

So, I thought it would be fun to share with you guys an easy-to-follow tutorial on how to create loose waves with your curling irons:) It's the most helpful tutorial I can find. I tried it, and it worked!

I call my shop an “Elegant Eco-friendly Crochet Boutique “. I design and create functional treats for the home, baby, and soul including many unique, upcycled fabric crochet items.

#3. How was your shop started?
I discovered Etsy in November of 2007, and was a buyer only for a couple of months. I quickly became addicted to the community and decided to dive in and see if others would appreciate what I have to offer.

#4. What are some unique things about your shop?
My shop is uniquely “me”. From the banner, to the photos, to the props and descriptions I take great pride in every detail. I love popping into my shop and strolling around! Customization is a special and super enjoyable process with me, and each item is always presented beautifully and lovingly to its recipient.

#5. What or who inspires you?
Besides the many amazing artists that inspire me every day on Etsy, my main inspiration comes from fabric and vintage colors and patterns. I walk out of every thrift store with tons of new color combinations that I want to try out!

#6. What is the item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why?
I REALLY enjoyed making the Love Your Mother rag rug. It was created for an Earth Day team challenge, and I had a great time dreaming up the concept and putting it all together.

Etsy can be a lonely place, and it can be hard to keep the faith in your work when you first get started. Hang in there! Stellar product needs to be backed by phenomenal customer service and excellent communication. Always consider your shop a work in progress, always be willing to listen to suggestions, never underestimate the value of your time and effort, and never say anything in the forums that you wouldn’t want plastered on the front page of a newspaper!

These bags "are ready for anything. Pack them, store them, crush them, and manhandle them everyday and they'll still be ready for more! A: I'd describe the two of us as quirky, goofy, fun, moms, and friends.

Q: What goodies do you offer in your shop?
A: We offer a variety of handy bagz and totes (as well as the occasional piece of meatbagz related wall art) with a wicked sense of humor. All are screen printed by hand with our original designs.

Q: How was your shop started?
A: Our shop started over tea one night...we've been friends since high school, and generally when we get together things start to get a little goofy. We were discussing how much we hated using plastic bags but also hated the boring plain canvas totes-or, even worse-being advertisements for big box grocery stores-and we decided we needed to make some fun market totes to bring home the meat in! one thing led to another and meatbagz was born!

Q: What are some unique things about your shop?
A: I'd say the most unique thing about the shop is our sense of humor. We only put designs up that make us laugh, and we hope they brighten other peoples' days too!

Q: What or who inspires you?
A: We inspire each other. We get together every week or so and while our kids are having a playdate (we have three 2 year olds and two 5 year olds, put together) we have meatbagz meetings. We make a pot of tea and sometimes just start cracking each other up, and sometimes we're inspired by a new bag we're trying out and the bag leads us to the design it needs! Generally, though, if we both think an idea is funny it's going to end up somewhere in the shop.

Q: What is the item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why?
Hmmm, we can only pick one? I guess at the moment it's our 100% recycled cotton market totes. They are absolutely delicious with their double handles and we love the fact that they're made with fair labor/wages. We were excited to find those within our budget.

Today, I felt rather discouraged... Honestly, things are not going so well. My plan of going back to school is heading no where, and I'm not sure what is the right thing to do with my life meanwhile.

Whenever I'm sad or lonely, I often read the book of Psalms in the Bible, especially the psalms of lamentations. Somehow, I see myself in the psalmists' pains and sorrows and thus find comfort and eventually joy... Psalm 22 is what I've read today. Besides the groaning of the psalmist, this Psalm is also a prophecy of Christ's crucifixion... It is indeed a divine intervention that Psalm 22 is followed by Psalm 23, a psalm of assurance and peace. Salvation has come, and after all, that's more than enough for me to continue to trust Him and stand strong...

Hope that this familiar Psalm will also bring you encouragement anew...

#2. What goodies do you offer in your shop?

A full line of Mineral Makeup, Makeup Brushes, Soaps, Lotions, Creams, Deodorants, Bath Teas & Treats, Lip Balms, and soon offering Lip Sticks and Mascara.

#3. How was your shop started?

I started my own jewelry making business in 2007, but had already been reading and studying natural skin care for years. In 2008 I started experimenting with making lots of soaps, lotions and makeup products. Once I got things just how I wanted them I couldn’t keep these great things to myself! I started selling at local craft shows and then branched out to selling online.

#4. What are some unique things about your shop?

I think what makes my shop unique is that I have a large variety of things! I guess I am sort of a workaholic because I just can’t keep myself from developing new products! I am also really sensitive to people with allergies and sensitive skin. I often will make custom items for people who can’t handle certain scents or ingredients. I don’t list or sell anything until it has been tested and I know it is safe!

#5. What or who inspires you?

Jesus is my inspiration in life and in business! I could not even make it a day without Him! I always try to serve my customers in a way that would be pleasing to Him!

#6. What is the item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why?

I can’t pick just one!! The top two are my deodorants and my mineral foundations! I was so happy to finally come up with a healthy deodorant that won’t cause cancer, and actually works! So I absolutely love my deodorants! It took a lot of trial and error to get it just right, and now I really think they are perfect. I also love my mineral foundation, because it was also really rewarding to finally get a finished product that I am so happy with and that does such a great job for so many people.

#7. What advice would you give to artists who are new to Etsy?

Be yourself and let your products reflect that. Don’t try to be like someone else! List as often as you can, so people can find you in the masses of items that are on etsy. And try to spread the word about your shop yourself. Don’t just post your items and wait for someone to notice them; blog, Twitter, take out ads, tell all your friends and family! Spread the word that you are HERE!

Today, let's sit back and enjoy a thoughtful conversation with Sarah Knight who is from Tecumseh, MI, and her incredible shop, Sarahkdesigns, is full of lovely digital prints and original paintings!

#2. What goodies do you offer in your shop?
I sell open edition prints (either of my digital collages or reproductions of my paintings, drawings, or illustrations) and my abstract salt on watercolor paintings.

#3. How was your shop started?
The name of my shop (sarahkdesigns) was what I came up with when I registered an account on ebay many years ago. I was mostly selling my snowflake Christmas cards, and I wanted something kind of adroit and demure since I was opening the account as a seller; I didn’t want to be like Sarah552 or something that sounded like words chosen at random out of a hat. My name is Sarah Knight, therefore I am Sarah K. The cards are my designs; ergo sarahkdesigns. I’m sure I could have come up with something more whimsical, but I didn’t want to trap myself to one idea or style.

So, just after Christmas of 2007 my mother told me about etsy, and I decided to just stick with the username. Of course, it would have been more convenient if she’d told me about etsy in like November, but, eh. Anyway, I’ve been drawing since I was 2 (or so my mother and her carefully hidden boxes of my childhood artwork allege) and every year I illustrate a calendar for my family and friends, oh, and I have a BFA from the School of Art & Design of the University of Michigan – so, selling prints of my many many illustrations just kind of seemed like the most natural idea.

(I also have another account, sarahknight.etsy.com/ where I do house my Christmas cards from August through December. I design snowflakes, I think I’ve made about 70 different ones at this point. Anyway, through the magic of Photoshop I combine my snowflakes with scans of my photos or paintings, and viola — I have hundreds of different card fronts!)

#4. What are some unique things about your shop?
I do what is commonly known as “digital collage” without using other people’s stuff (stock images). All of the graphic elements used in the creation of my digital collages are my intellectual property. Those are indeed my drawings, my paintings, my photos, or scans of my stuff (like leaves from my yard). I suppose it might seem a bit self-centered, but it surely beats being sued for using (and therefore reproducing) someone else’s images, and I don’t have to pay myself licensing fees.

On a slightly less interesting note: my packaging is mostly re-purposed cardboard, therefore I make all my own boxes. So, the box your purchase comes in was specifically measured to suit the item. The cardboard comes from a grocery store. A lot of it was either unused cardboard display stands (those things you often almost run over with a cart when you’re trying to make your way through the aisle) or the cases that boxes of cereal are packed in (because they’re big, wide, and flat).

#5. What or who inspires you?
Nature, seasons, holidays, kitsch, the Midwest, birds, flowers, color theory, and happy accidents.

#6. What is the item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why?
It sounds kind of sentimental, but I do kind of love them all like they’re my children, so it’s difficult to pick a favorite. That, and I pretty much use the same technique as it pertains to the kind of images (digital collages are all pretty much the same process, paintings were all a process, as are my watercolors).

I just made it. It wasn’t for a project or a calendar or a card front or a gift. And is a digital collage that was assembled from pieces that were all made for specific projects. The starry sky was an element that was created for the December graphic of last year’s calendar. The irises were an element created for the June graphic of last year’s calendar. The background is a scan of one of my many many unused (unfinished) acrylic paintings. And the luna moths were something I drew as a graphite pencil drawing for the state fair about a decade ago; I just scanned them into the computer and printed them out so I could colorize them. Oh, and violet is my favorite color. So everything just kind of came together. That and it’s one of my mother’s favorites.

Her shop was established in May 29, 2007, and has 199 sales so far.

#2. What goodies do you offer in your shop?
I make handbags and accessories mostly out of recycled coffee bags and potato sacks, but I also love working with silks from kimonos and obis or other beautiful fabrics. I just started making yoga mat bags out of Japanese obis. I love color and contrast.

#3. How was your shop started?
In the beginning, I opened my shop to sell my husband's items. He is a woodcrafter and also makes earrings. After a while I started selling my handbags and now that is all I have in the shop. (sorry, honey!)
I began making handbags after a work injury that left me depressed and broke. I decided to take my life back into my own hands and do something that made me feel good. Since I couldn't carry a big purse after my shoulder surgeries, I worked on a design for a wristlet to carry what I needed. That original purse evolved over time and then I started getting requests for bigger bags.

#4. What are some unique things about your shop?
I started using the coffee and potato sacks to set myself apart from the other bag makers out there. I wanted to be unique! People enjoy novelty items and I live in the middle of Kona Coffee Country so the bags are readily available to me. I also used to live in Idaho so have been quite creative in sourcing those sacks to use as well. I actually am licensed by the state of Idaho to use the bags and their logo in the production of my handbags. At this time, I am the ONLY person permitted to do so!

#5. What or who inspires you?
I am mostly inspired by other strong and determined women who go out and create the lives that they want to live. I also take inspiration from my own sense of humor. I love making things that "tickle" me. You will often see novelty bags like my watermelon bag or bags made from silly fabrics.

#6. What is the item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why?
I think it would be my Silk Yoga Mat bag. I love that the textiles in the bag have a history. Somebody once wore that obi and the kimono that the bag is made from. Who were they? Where did they go all dressed up? The bag turned out so beautifully that I leave it hanging in my studio just so I can look at it.

#7. What advice would you give to artists who are new to Etsy?
You can not just post your item and wait for people to find you. You MUST be very diligent about listing new items or renewing listings, commenting in the forums and treasuries, social networking like twitter and facebook and always carry business cards with you to shamelessly promote your work. And don't spend so much time at the computer that you don't have time to be creating new works! It is a balancing act!

A: Since studying photography I have done various types of photographic work but began focussing on the artistic side of photography this year. I opened my store when I started my maternity leave a couple of months ago. I thought it would just be a part time thing but I think I work more hours on Etsy and my photography than I did when I was at work. I love it!

Q: What are some unique things about your shop?
A: I have a unique eye for photography, I love the feeling when i'm looking through the viewfinder and everything comes together. I'm not limitted to one subject as I love finding the beauty in all things.

Q: What or who inspires you?
A: I'm inspired by learning and experiencing. I love adventures even if it's five minutes walk from my home. Textures and light inspire me. My goal is to inspire others through my photography to get out and play and experience the world. I have a passion for Europe too, the buildings, the food, the style..

Q: What is the item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why?
A: I love my animal images. It takes so much patience to photograph animals because I want to capture something a little different and special. It's always worth the wait though to capture their personality.

How in the world can you eat these cakes!!!

These cakes are so amazing that if I have them, I'll probably stare at them for hours before actually eating them! They are from an online cake competition hosted by threadless T shirt company, in which its competitors create cakes that resemble shirts' designs of the company (Click on the link to see the shirt and cake side by side. My Uncorked line started as a way to keep young girls interested in math and science. I had heard about Etsy from my niece who has a shop called ButtonEnvy and loved it at first sight.

#4. What are some unique things about your shop?

I try to offer unique items with green, industrial materials in both my shops. I am not a jeweler by any stretch of the imagination! I have always looked at things with an eye toward their alternate uses. I have alot of things in my house that have been repurposed into other things and try to bring that same spirit into my shops.

#5. What or who inspires you?

I am inspired by trips to the city, crowds, museums (I am a science nut), junkyards, junk piles (ie trash) and time spent alone.

#6. What is the item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why?

Definitely soldering my lockets because it is such a calming, centering activity- which is something that does not come easily to me. I tend to naturally be all over the place and it really forces me to focus.

#7. What advice would you give to artists who are new to Etsy?

I would say to be true to yourself and produce unique work. Use the best camera you can get your hands on and really work on your pictures. Make sure your product is top-notch; just because you can make something doesn't mean you can sell it. Also, realize Etsy will likely be just one avenue for your business. You will probably need to do shows and use advertising, blogs and social networking to grow your business.

"Banh mi thit" or Vietnamese Sandwich

May I introduce you to my favorite Vietnamese fastfood?

"Banh mi thit" means bread stuffed with meat in Vietnamese. This dish is an excellent example of French-Vietnamese cuisine fusion. For instance, the bread alone is basically a baguette made with wheat AND rice flour (to make it crispier), and the sandwich as a whole combines French ingredients (baguettes, pate and mayonnaise) with Vietnamese ones like cilantro, hot pepper, fish sauce and pickled carrots. The mayonnaise in "banh mi thit" also has a Vietnamese twist; it is a spread that is a mixture of egg yolk, cooking oil/butter, and sometimes spices.

Popular "banh mi thit" fillings include roasted or grilled pork, Vietnamese ham, pate, mayonnaise, chicken and head cheese.

The contrasting flavors and textures of the sandwich — as well as its relatively low cost — make it a popular dish. You can see a "banh mi thit" stall like this one in almost every street corner in Vietnam.

If there's a good-sized group of Vietnamese immigrants where you live, it's very likely that you'll be able to find some yummy "banh mi thit" in town. So, the next time you see it, muster all your courage and give it a try! :)

Flickr, the weather, blogging,looking around craft stalls. My family is inspirational to me.

The Raindrops Wall Hanging. It's part applique, part embroidery. I enjoyed taking a dismal element of England (the weather!) & making it fun & cute.

I'm sick. Just a common cold. Good thing, it's not H1N1. LOL.
BUT I love you guys! So, here I am (in my sickness) blogging about remedies I've found on Etsy that would make me and those who are sick feel better. All these shops have great feedback, so no fear, friends :)

Buttons/Badges/Pins Hand drawn, Custom Made, and Vintage Rock and Nostalgia buttons, mirrors, also.

#3. How was your shop started?

Started in 1979 in Lodi, NY. Inspired by a woman selling hand painted buttons as souvenirs on a corner near The Cannery in San Francisco. I bought one she painted of the Golden Gate Bridge. When I got back to NY, I searched the Thomas Register at the Library to find out where one can buy a button machine. I went to the bank and borrowed $1,000 to buy my first button machine which was $800 back then, and reams of papers and art markers.

I applied to arts and crafts show by mailing in slides of the button booth and samples of the buttons. That's the way it was done back then. I got into big art shows like The Cornhill Festival and The Clothesline Show. And continued doing shows until 1991 after my kids arrived, 2 adopted, and 1 biological.

In September of 2008 I dragged the business out of the cobwebs and opened a shop on Etsy.

#4. What are some unique things about your shop?

Wide Variety, something for everyone. Buttons for little children, parents, teens, seniors. Every subject: Sayings, animals, peace, professions, humor, serious, rock and roll, famous people, sports, hobbies. I try to have every subject imaginable. And if I don't have it, I'll make it.

#5. What or who inspires you?
My kids inspire me. As a single parent in a recessing economy I am inspired to keep working, work fast, every minute of the day and evening counts. So, I respond quickly to potential customers, I mail orders out same day or next day, I give feedback as soon as items are paid for. I list new items every day. I operate my shop as if my life and my kids' lives depend on it for the food on our table, because it does.

#6. What is the item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why?

#7. What advice would you give to artists who are new to Etsy?

1. User Name is the shop name. I messed up there. 2. Accept all forms of payment. Why turn down a sale if someone does not want to have a pay pal account? I accept personal checks, money orders and have even received cash in envelopes. I also barter. 3. Don't make people of other countries have to email you for a cost to ship. If possible find out the cost or estimate the cost to ship. Some you might under estimate but some you over estimate and it all works out in the end.

Q: How was your shop started?

A: It's been my goal since I was exposed to graphic design in college to create cards and stationery and sell them some day. I never expected it to happen so soon, but surprisingly a bit of unemployment gave me the time I needed to get started.

Q: What are some unique things about your shop?

A: My shop is unique by its simplistic designs. Most of the designs on the cards are created from simple shapes and are more graphical than realistic, which happily sets me apart from many other of the stationery shops.

Q: What or who inspires you?

A: I'm inspired by the people around me and daily events. Most of the cards are based off of something I observe in my everyday life. Sometimes I create cards where I see a lack, such as cute little boy birthday invitations.

Q: What is the item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why?

A: It's a toss up on what I enjoyed making the most. I enjoy making most of it because I love the look of the final product when it's all cut and packaged. Probably, though I'd have to say the journal was my favorite because it was the most tactile and tangible item to make in my shop - and I plan to make many more because the process is incredibly fun and rewarding.

Q: Do you have any additional notes to my lovely blog's readers?

A: Creating for me is more of a necessity than something I chose to do. I have this need to create, that if I don't it will make me more frustrated with everyday life. If you're at all like this, don't make the "real" world put a damper on your creativity because it's creativity in this world that makes it an exciting and vibrant place to live.

Me? My morning has been a little bit dull. So, here am I daydreaming of a perfect morning...

So, once upon a perfect morning, I'll be sitting in a comfy chair with my most cozy and sweet quilt throw (by Atticwear)....

...next to a little side table with a romantic tin tray in my favorite color (from Kimchiandclover) and a unique little moss filled world (Terrarium by Greenbriar).

There, I'll be sipping tea from my colorful anemone tea cup (by littleflowerdesign), munching some white chocolate pistachio biscotti (by Webvanessa)....

.... while leisurely reading a surprise handwritten letter full of wonderful illustration and/or collage artwork by Joon of Flyinghousewife (Yes! You can buy yourself a handwritten letter!).

A: All the ideas I have running in my head transferred into metal.

Q: How was your shop started?

A: After getting very frustrated over my work (Human resources).. I decided to quit , the kind of things you do and you don't know what the next step is or what you are going to do.

I was making jewelry but mostly really intricate pieces it was like my way out of the stress I was living in, never imagined I could make a living out of it mostly because I was in Costa Rica and well even getting a paypal was so hard for me needed an account in the states.To make a huge story short… I managed to get a paypal, a wonderful friend of mine helped me doing all this and also had to bring down some machines and tools all the way from the states , because they don't have them here at all any were all this to make a workshop home, all of this because my teacher said one day "You can"..

To me the first piece I sold online was surreal and to this day I still ask myself with every sale,every conversation .. "Is this really happening? "

Q: What are some unique things about your shop?

A: A very personal approach to jewelry, every single piece I make I look at once is finished and I Imagine a person wearing it or giving to a special person.. If is a piece I would be proud to say " I made it" .. If I would wear it myself…or give to my mother.. If the piece has this pre-approval and applies in all these categories and my final reaction is pure love .. then goes to the shop..I have a lot of things I haven't listed just because I am not 100% pleased with the result… :)

Q: What or who inspires you?

A:This was the hardest question because I can't tell you exactly what it is everyday things and as I run into things .. I get ideas , I think they come to me instead.. I see something and I see the finished piece in my head and go make it..

I've always had an interest in classic pieces of jewelry so I also have some attempts at making my own take of the classic designs.

Q: What is the item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why?

A: Currently listed Martirio all the way.. As I was making it I was sure, this is the kind of jewelry I want to make from now on, original and it is exactly what I had in mind it's also way more artistic .. I love it so much and I enjoyed making her hair, lips all the little details…

Q: What advice would you give to artists who are new to Etsy?

A: Don’t get sad when things don’t sell right away etsy seems to have a rhythm and one minute you don’t sell a thing the next you get orders..

Just keep working and enjoying it , this reflects in your shop and you can tell when a person wants to sell something and when one person wants to create and share… Every human is an artist. If the dream of your life is to make beautiful art people will notice this and appreciate it.

Vietnam has a deep-rooted agricultural culture. Back in the good old days, when children didn't have (and weren't spoiled by) many toys and computer games, their parents made them toys from the coconut trees in in the backyard, like this cute grasshopper. The children adored them so much that they would play with them when the coconut leaf of the grasshopper still looks fresh and then press these toys in their books to keep them for a very long time.

Only young coconut leaves are used to fold into different kinds of toys (pretty much a Vietnamese version of origami). This folk art used to be so popular that almost everyone knows how to make grasshoppers, birds, prawns, roses or hat out of coconut leaves.

These days, these coconut toys becomes a must-have goody for all tourist in Vietnam, and kids who grew up in the city like me also love them since they tell a story of a sweet childhood of living in the countryside that they don't have.

Everyone love a good stories, right? So, once a upon a time, there is a wonderfully talented crafter who musters all her/his courage to make her/his much loved craft a business and share her/his work with others...

So, other than Etsy and Twitter, I have to admit that I have other addictions as well. Here are two FUN (and FREE) things I really enjoy lately :)

Do you see my cute dressed up avatar on the left sidebar? That is from poupee.com, a Japanese web application for grown-ups who do not want to grow up. LOL. It's like having a virtual doll (poupee is doll in French) and dress it up all you want. The only difference is that you can "buy"clothes for your doll without out begging your Mama for money.

No, it won't cost a cent. Here's how it works: you post some photos of your (real) wearable items (clothes, jewelry, shoes, hair accessories, make-ups, etc.) to share with others. Then, you'll earn some ribbons, which is the virtual money unit on poupee.com, to buy adorable clothes, shoes, etc. for your dolls. You can also make friends with other poupees, take the snapshot of your poupee and share with others, too (like my case). How I love looking at people's closets and dressing up my doll in adorable outfits (that I don't have. lol.)!

(One problem with this is that since it's originally Japanese, sometime you may feel a little lost when you wander into a page with everything in Japanese, but let me assure you that the English there is decent, and you can definitely manage. I'm not Japanese, you know!)

The second addiction is the "Farm Town" application on Face book. Above is a snapshop from the game. Basically, you'll be a farmer working diligently to plant and harvest different crops. You can also have fruit trees, flowers and animals. Then, if you work hard, you'll keep getting richer and richer to the point you can buy a stunning mansion like this one (and many other fun thing). If only real life is that easy! LOL.

What I like the most about this game is that it is very interactive. You can chat with other players, visit/tend their farm, hire someone to work for you (and earn more profit that way). Of course, if you're broke or need more money to buy seeds (and what's not) for your farm, you can go to the marketplace to find a harvesting job in someone's farm. Fun!

(The only problem with this game is that the crops take forever to grow - from 4 hours to even 4 days real time, but you can always work on someone else's farm and earning heaps of money while waiting for your crops)

How to make Vietnamese (Milk) Coffee

Have you heard of the whole deal of "Starbuck + Hooters" of some Vietnamese cafes in CA? Honestly, I find it rather sad that they have to use sex appeals to sell something so wonderful (already) like our Ca phe sua, aka Vietnamese (milk) coffee. I have had many American friends try Vietnamese (milk) coffee, and almost all of them fell in love with it instantly! So, for the pure love of Vietnamese milk coffee, today, I'll share with you all how to make it!

The main differences of Vietnamese (milk) Coffee is its use of Vietnamese (coffee) filter and condensed milk. The result is an unforgetable strong and sweet flavor!

A Vietnamese filter is like a small coffee pot where you "cooked" coffee with hot water. It includes a filter/screen (top left), a press (the part with a handle to press coffee, bottom left), a chamber for coffee/hot water (top right) and a lid (bottom right). Very simple and effective! You can find this at any Vietnamese/Chinese market for less than $10.

Sweetened condensed milk is a mixture of whole milk and about 40 to 45 percent sugar, which is heated until about 60 percent of the water evaporates. This sticky-sweet ingredient is often used in baked goods and desserts such as candies, puddings, and pies, as well as a substitute for cream and sugar in coffee drinks (such is the case here! It's also very convenient!).

STEP 1:
Put about 1/3 of an inch of condensed milk in the bottom of a coffee cup. The more condensed milk, the sweeter your Vietnamese milk coffee will be. The less condensed milk, the stronger the coffee flavor is.

(NOTE: If you prefer coffee without milk, you may skip step 1, and simply add sugar/ice - optional - to your coffee after it is brewed.)

STEP 2: Assemply all part of the coffee filter, except the press.
Place about three and a half rounded teaspoons of coffee into the device (more coffee, stronger flavor and vice versa). Put the press inside the chamber and turn it until it starts to get snug (not tight).

STEP 3:
Place the filter on top of the coffee cup. Pour hot water into the device until it is about 1/4 full. Here's the secret of its strong flavor: just enough boiling hot water, not too much. Your coffee will be as strong as an expresso shot!

STEP 4:

Tighten the press (or the water would drip really fast leaving your coffee grind unbrewed), put the lid on and here's the most beautiful part: WAIT. Go chat with someone or maybe twittering for at least 5 minutes (or until you have your desired amount of coffee) then voila! Your coffee is brewed.

STEP 5: Remove the coffee filter, and stir coffee and milk together. The coffee can be served either hot (ca phe sua nong) or cold with ice (ca phe sua da). My personal favorite is having some French bread or pastry with my hot Vietnamese milk coffee. Simply divine!

"Hoa phuong" is nicknamed "the students' flower" since it only blooms in the summer when all students begin their summer break. For high school graduating seniors, this flower also has a bittersweet meaning since it signals their separation from all their friends and teachers.

My passion for jewelry making...

Yes, making jewelry is a hobby. It is so much fun and exciting even though I wouldn't recommend it to everyone since it can be quite costly. LOL. Seriously, nothing (relatively speaking!) can beat the thrill of anticipating how a piece of jewelry would turn out and seeing them in real life (vs. in my imagination). Sometimes, the beads just choose one another, and after all, I can't help wondering, "What do I have to do with this beautiful jewelry? I can't believe I made it!" :)

Nevertheless, as a quasi-artist and a Christian, making jewelry means a lot more to me...

Opening and running this jewelry shop on Etsy is pretty much my first public acceptance of my artistic side, almost like having peace with yourself after years of struggling. Though I always love creating things (I've tried many, too many, different kinds of arts and crafts! Paiting, flower arranging, crochet, knitting, clay flower, etc.), I had never felt confident enough to share my arts or to consider arts as someting I can do seriously for an income. This journey with Papillon has been a much needed creative outlet and a huge leap of faith (trusting God and trusting my ability) for me, and it's been very enjoyable so far (though not very profitable -literally- yet. lol).

Wearing jewelry is in fact, an act of embracing your womanhood. Jewelry calls for attention at a certain part of your face or you body. So, wearing jewelry is pretty much saying, "Look at me. I'm cute." :) even if the piece of jewelry is very delicate or subtle. Creating beautiful jewelry, for me, is a way of helping and encouraging other woman to be confident in themselves. Nope, a woman's apprearance does not determine her worth. In fact, as a Christian, I believe that my worth lies in the fact that God call me "his daughter", "holy and beloved", and whether I look great or not does not change that truth. Yet, our look is an important part of who we are or how people perceive us. Wearing a beautiful piece of jewelry encourages us to wear a matching lovely outfit/shoes/ makeup, and possibly improves our entire appearance, boosts our confidence and change out outlook of one whole day! It's not so much about being attractive, but more about being presentable and confident. From that angle, I feel very blessed to be able to do this job to serve other women. In our society, there's already too much pressure on women, why do we have to compromise with such pressures and whine, "If only I'm a man, I can do this and this..."? Instead, let's look great, feel confident and proud to be a woman because we are absolutely precious (in God's eyes) and capable of contributing so much for our family and society!

This has been my longest posting ever, and if you've read this far, thank you so much for reading my "unofficial mission statement" for Papillon jewelry. I love making jewelry, and now, you know why, my friend!

Today I just shipped out a few orders (yay!) with a new packaging idea. Some Etsians comment that I should include something uniquely Vietnam to my shop since that would be very interesting to others and my jewelry is necessarily ethnic. So, in my "light-bulb" moment, I decided to reuse old Vietnam map to make shipping envelope and add a little Vietnam's postcard to the package :) That of course adds a little extra cost, but it's well worth it because I'm so happy to share with my buyers about where I come from :).

Thanh Long / Dragon Fruit!

Dragon fruit, called "Thanh Long" in Vietnamese, is cactus family, origin in Central America desert area.

The fruit can weigh from 150-600 grams; some may reach one kilogram. The white flesh, which is eaten raw, is mildly sweet and sour while in calories. It is generally recommended that dragon fruit be eaten chilled, for improved flavor.

To prepare a "Thanh Long" for consumption, cut the fruit vertically into two halves. From here, either cut the halves into watermelon-like slices, or scoop out the two white fleshy halves with a spoon. Eating the fruit is sometimes likened to that of the kiwi due to a prevalence of sesame seed-sized black crunchy seeds found in the flesh of both fruits which make for a similar texture upon consumption.

Here's an irony. Reading for pleasure has been under satisfied luxury for me in college, yet now that I'm out of college, I don't even want to look at books for a while ! LOL.

By reading for pleasure, I mean something that will enrich my soul in some way and of course is enjoyable. Usually, this includes spiritual-enrichment books and some classic literature (Trust me, I have a long list of must-read classics). With the exception of the Bible, which is my sustaining source, I haven't read for pleasure that much. Actually, recently, I started to read more again, but it's not even for fun! They're all books on marketing and stuff like that to improve my Etsy Shop. Help!

Any plan for the weekend yet? All right, my goal for this post is to make you check out some closest Vietnamese Restaurant in the neighborhood this weekend for some of this famous Vietnamese noodle soup, called "PHO" :)

"What is Pho? (pronounced "FUH") For many Vietnamese, pho is life, love and all things that matter. We treasure pho, and most of us have loved it since the day we were old enough to hold a pair of chopsticks.

The pho itself is actually a noodle made from the finest white rice. The pho is then topped with thin slices of beef. The rich, vibrant broth, is produced after long hours of simmering in the finest beef and bone marrow. This flavorful broth is then poured onto the pho. The rich bowl of pho is then topped with onions, cilantro and green onions. Pho is then served with side dish of bean sprouts, limes, spikes of basil, and sliced green chili on the side to create a healthy, delicious, and satisfying meal.

Pho provides a delicious one-dish meal for your breakfast, lunch or even dinner. Pho in every Vietnamese family is a must, much in the same way as pasta is an inextricable part of Italian culinary tradition and culture."

It's rainy season in Vietnam, and I'm writing this post while "listening to the rhythm of the falling rain" like the lyric of my favorite song. "Stuff white people like"

This book by Christian Lander is my new favorite. Perhaps it's because I like his first name or because "Asian girls" are included on the list(#11). LOL. A few disclaimers:

1/ The book is not meant to be racist at all since it is written by a white guy.

2/You may or may not agree with everything said in the book, but you'll surely find it interesting. It is not supposed to be a research paper with detailed survey from a large sample of the population but a (somewhat random) collections of personal experiences and comments. The tone of the book is actually quite humorous and intelligent with a hint of sarcasm.

3/No, I haven't finished reading the book yet (and do not intend to do so soon). The book is only 224 pages, but it is one of those you can read a bit at a time and savor the rest for later.

That's said here's a few things that I've just learned that I have in common with the "white people" (and lots of Etsians, I believe!) :)

"School is so OVERRATED", said my favorite professor. Don't get us wrong. We do not promote "No-schooling" or underestimate education. She is finishing up her doctoral degree, and I'm working and saving for graduate school. Yet, one thing I've learned is that more schooling does not necessarily make you a smarter or better person. Take my oldest sister. She couldn't finish high school due to my family's financial situation at the time, and yet she is among the kindest and smartest person I've ever known (All right, may be I'm a little bit biased:). The older I get, the more I respect her for the sacrifices she made for us, younger siblings, and her wisdom in life. Schooling is helpful, and it definitely enriched my life. Still, it has nothing to do with my self-worth, and I'm so thankful that I have a Father in heaven who loves me for who I am no matter what!

Eco-friendly and Homemade Soaps rock my world!

I'm so in the mood for cleaning today. Look at my shop! All the pictures has just been "tidied up" and updated. It may be too subtle for you to notice the difference, but let me tell you. Photoshop can make all the differences in the world, and a better thumbnails picture means a lot more views! Yay!

Now to real cleaning, look at this soap! Isn't it crazy? I would definitely feel more motivated to hop to the shower in the morning. It is truly the fulfillment of my childhood dream: to have some soap that I can eat (well, with my eyes and nose only, I guess :))

This quirky side of mine

These earrings are VERY DIFFERENT from what I usually make. You know, I'm usually rather nice and quiet (!!!), but only a selected few (bless their hearts!) knows that sometimes I can be quite quirky and perhaps... strange. So this is just one of those time when I just couldn't contain my quirkiness inside anymore and started to wonder, "Who would wear an ear wire alone?" Guess who? Me! And I'm sure I'm NOT gonna be the only quirky one out there. (Soon available on Etsy).

"I don't make cheap jewelry"

Today, I received a comment (out of good intention) that some of my jewelry is a bit TOO colorful (since most "common" people shy away from colorful jewelry that gain much attention), and perhaps I should use less beads to reduce cost (and PRICE). At that very moment, the artist in me blurted out, "I don't make cheap jewelry. I only make things that inspire me, (and hopefully others)" while the business woman is screaming inside, "Hold on. She does make some sense. After all, if you don't make some SALEs, you can't just keep making more jewelry".

Alas, PRICE. How I hate that word! It gives me so many headaches... All right! So, after thinking long (!) and hard, I chose something in between the two extremes. I went ahead and carefully REDUCED the $PRICE$ of several (if not most) items. That's what I call sacrificing small short-term profits for long-term benefits". So, wish me luck!

P.S: This price reduction is also in honor of my days as a poor college student who had to look away from many pieces of jewelry (no matter how inexpensive) she liked to stick to the budget or to simply protect the meager content of her wallet. LOL.

My FIRST shipping batch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi y'all!
I'm shipping out 8 pairs of earrings today! How exciting! Some of that was part of the GIVEAWAY while some came from the Weekend cRaZy SALE. One order is actually from ESTONIA. Can you believe that?!!! The two \events really gave my shop a lot more exposure :).

Making recycled envelopes and Thank-you card was the most fun thing. The envelope was made out of an old (or "vintage", I shall say) French Grammar book, which I suspected that it was in the house since my Dad's last attempt to review his French at least 15 years ago. Then, there was some part that I got to do some coloring with crayon as well. How fun! Similarly, the "Thank you" card was also made of maps from a very old French Geography (or "Geographie", I shall say) book. Sorry, guys, no picture since they're all inside the envelope! Maybe the only way for you to see it is to get a "Thank you"card for yourself (I wonder how? >_<). LOL.
